Scalp Care and Health
A healthy scalp is essential for hair growth and maintenance. It's so easy to overlook the health of our scalps, who can really see up there anyways? But ignoring signs of damage to the scalp can have monumental consequences. Luckily for you we are here to help you identify the solutions to some common issues.
Dandruff
Dandruff is a very common problem. When purchasing dandruff shampoo, be sure to follow the instructions on the packaging. Some dandruff shampoos require leaving the product on the scalp for a few minutes before rinsing, but others call for an immediate rinse. Many dandruff shampoos use Coal Tar which can make your scalp sensitive to UV rays. Coal Tar can also discolor light hair colors. An alternative treatment to dandruff is a scalp oil.
Oily Scalp
The solution to an oily scalp is simple- shampoo more often! But be sure skip clarifying shampoos. Reach for a sulfate free shampoo for one day, then switch to an exfoliating shampoo that has tea tree oil or salicylic acid the next day. Exfoliating shampoos help decrease buildup, a common trait to those with oily scalps.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a condition in which scaly patches appear on the body, including the scalp. These scaly patches can itch, burn, and can even cause hair loss. When treating psoriasis of the scalp, be sure to scope out two active ingredients; salicylic acid and tar (either coal or wood tar). Salicylic acid softens the skin patches and the tar slows skin growth. Psoriasis has common symptoms of dandruff, but only a doctor will be able to tell the difference.
Hair Loss
There can be many causes to hair loss including thyroid issues, autoimmune diseases, alopecia, or aging. Make sure to meet with your doctor if you are experiencing hair loss. There are certain shampoos you can use to stimulate hair growth as well as hair oils and even hair transplants.
